2010 Southern Cross Stakes Final Field & Preview

February 11th, 2010

On Saturday Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse will host the coveted Royal Sovereign Stakes Day featuring the $125 000 Group 3 Jim Beam Southern Cross Stakes (formerly known as the Frederick Clissold Stakes).

The final field and barrier draw for the 1200m feature were announced today with an 11 horse line-up of quality sprinters ready to battle it out for the title.

Legendary trainer Bart Cummings has his five-year-old gelding Kroner engaged in the race. Drawn in barrier five Kroner will be ridden by Glyn Schofield.

Cummings’ son Anthony is also represented in the Southern Cross Stakes by Prima Nova in gate three.

Recent Carrington Stakes winner, Clarry Conners’ talented mare Court has drawn wide with barrier eight while Graeme Murray’s Kenny’s World has secured the prized barrier one.

Conners will be praying for good weather at Randwick as Court’s dismal record on wet tracks may see her scratched from Saturday’s event if it rains.

Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse is quietly confident with her Southern Cross Stakes runner Dreamscape drawn ideally in barrier two.

The lightly raced four-year-old son of Choisir is a proven sprinter having claimed victory in three races between 1200m – 1400m and won his latest barrier trail at the Kensington track on January 29.

Last start winner in a 1100m handicap at Randwick, Pins On Parade will start on the far outside from barrier 11 and will be ridden by Tye Angland.

The Joseph Pride-trained Geared Up is another last start winner looking for victory in the Southern Cross Stakes on Saturday. The four-year-old Testa Rossa gelding will start from barrier seven.

The 2010 Southern Cross Stakes is scheduled as the final race on the day’s great eight-race programme and is due to jump at 5:45pm (AEDST).
