2012 Southern Cross Stakes – Rosehill Race Preview

January 31st, 2012

The Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes is due to run at Rosehill Racecourse on Saturday February 25, 2012.

The race is worth a total of $125,000 in prize money and is run over a distance of 1,200 metres.

The 2012 Southern Cross Stakes is run under quality handicap conditions and is open to horses aged three-years-old and upwards.

The Southern Cross Stakes was called the Frederick Clissold Stakes until its name was changed in 2009.

The 2012 Southern Cross Stakes is run on Apollo Stakes Day, and shares the day with the Group 2 Apollo Stakes and Listed Triscay Stakes.

Last year’s Southern Cross Stakes winner was Sister Madly, who won the race by almost two lengths ahead of Pinwheel and Cardinal Virtue.

The five-year-old mare is currently preparing for a tilt at the Group 1 Lightning Stakes at Flemington on February 18, 2012.

“It’s going to be tough, but it looks the right race for her,” trainer John Sadler said.

“She’s been back in work for about six week, but she had a fair bit of residual fitness from the spring.”

The exceptionally bred Redoute’s Choice mare has won four of her 17 race starts and has earned more than $650,000 in prize money.
